Privacy policy
Last updated 31 October 2026
Selkie is made by FOANA LLC, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA ("we", "us"). This policy explains what we collect when you use Selkie, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: we collect what we need to run your stories, we don't sell your data, and we don't use advertising trackers.
What we collect
- Your account: your email address and a sign-in ID (from Google, if you sign in that way).
- Your age confirmation: only that you're over 18. We don't keep your date of birth.
- Your stories: what you write (premises, your own moves, messages), your choices, the story text written for you, and your saves.
- Your purchases: what you bought and when. Card details are handled by our payment provider, Stripe, and never reach us.
- Messages to us: anything you send to support.
- Technical records: things like your IP address, browser, and error and safety logs, used to keep Selkie running and secure.
Why we use it
- To write your stories and keep your saves (to provide the service you asked for).
- To take payments, give refunds and keep the records tax law requires (contract and legal obligation).
- To keep Selkie safe: checking for content our terms don't allow, and stopping abuse (our legitimate interest in a safe service).
- To improve the writing: we count how often phrases appear across stories, as anonymous totals with nothing that identifies you, to tune our style checks.
- To answer you when you write to us.
How the AI sees your story
To write each scene, we send the story so far and what you wrote to our AI provider, Anthropic. Anthropic doesn't use this to train its models. It deletes these inputs and outputs within 30 days, except content flagged for safety reasons, which it may keep for up to 2 years.
Who else handles your data
Only companies that help us run Selkie, under contracts that limit what they can do with it:
- Anthropic: writing the stories.
- Supabase: accounts, sign-in and saved stories.
- Fly.io: our servers.
- Cloudflare: this website and our email.
- Stripe (and Link, its checkout service): payments, tax and receipts.
- Resend: sign-in and account emails.
We share data with them over encrypted connections, and only what each one needs to do its job. We don't sell your personal information or share it for advertising. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.
How we keep it safe
- Everything between your device and Selkie travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS), and our providers encrypt the data they store.
- You sign in with an email link or with Google, so we never store a password.
- Only the people who run Selkie can reach your account data, and only to run the service, answer you or keep Selkie safe.
- Card details go straight to Stripe, which is certified to the payment industry's security standard (PCI DSS). We never see or store them.
- If your data is ever exposed, we'll tell you, and the authorities where the law requires it.
Cookies
Selkie uses only what's needed to keep you signed in and remember your settings. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies, and this website loads nothing from other companies' servers.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and stories while your account is open. When you close it, we delete them within 30 days, apart from purchase records we must keep for tax law and safety records we keep for up to 90 days.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing to support@playselkie.com. Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, the UK or some US states), you may have further rights, including objecting to how we use your data and complaining to your data protection authority. We answer requests within 30 days.
Adults only
Selkie is for people aged 18 and over. If we learn that someone under 18 has an account, we close it and delete their data.
Where your data is
We're based in the United States, and our providers may process data in the US and other countries. Where the law requires it, we use safeguards such as standard contractual clauses for data from the EU and UK.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in Selkie or by email before the change takes effect.
